What is Home Learning?
Home Learning is Parkside’s approach to homework. Home Learning supports children to embed learning outside of the classroom and to know and remember more over time.
When Home Learning is set, it will have one of three main purposes:
- Recall and retrieve knowledge or practise skills so learning isn’t forgotten.
- Embed current learning through practice so learning sticks and deepens.
- Develop core literacy skills, particularly in reading, that are beneficial in all subject areas.
What will Home Learning look like for my child?
Home Learning tasks will vary across subject areas as the knowledge and skills children need to embed across the curriculum are different. For example, tasks that might be appropriate for English might not be appropriate for Maths. The frequency of Home Learning will also differ due to the allocated time subjects have within our fortnightly timetable. Staff who see students more will set Home Learning more frequently.
To ensure Home Learning is easily accessible and on a platform that is familiar, staff will set learning via Google Classroom. The Home Learning set may require students to work on paper/other online platforms such as Seneca, however, for consistency, it will be set with clear instructions and deadlines on Google Classroom.

Home Learning will not be set for PHSCE, Core Physical Education, E+A or Coaching.
Home Learning for our KS5 students will be set weekly for each subject area but this may be more.
On top of the allocated Home Learning, there is an expectation that KS4 and 5 students should be engaging with ongoing revision and wider reading. At KS5 there shall be specific study room work set and at KS4 there will be access to our online study space on Google Classroom. As part of our Expert Learners programme we will train students in how to be independent, resilient learners. This will involve work on how to revise and how to manage your time at home.
