We are committed to supporting all students with their individual needs. We understand that the process of seeking a diagnosis for neurodiverse conditions / specific learning difficulties can be complex. The following guidance is designed to help parents and carers navigate these pathways effectively.
ADHD and Autism Assessments (The ‘Right to Choose’)
While the school can support referrals through CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services), we are aware that current waiting times for this route can be significant (often several years).
To access support more quickly, we recommend parents speak to their GP about the NHS ‘Right to Choose’ pathway. This allows you to select a specific mental health provider, which can reduce waiting times to approximately one year.
How to proceed:
-
Book an appointment with your GP.
-
Request a referral via ‘Right to Choose’ to an approved provider, such as The Oakdale Centre.
-
Provide your GP with the provider’s referral link (e.g., Oakdale Referral Form).
-
Share the school contact: Please provide the GP with our email address (inclusion@parksideschool.net) so that we can complete the necessary school referral documentation to support your application.
Dyslexia Assessments
Please be aware that we do not conduct diagnostic screeners or full assessments for Dyslexia. If you wish to pursue a formal diagnosis, this must be arranged privately.
Exam Access Arrangements: Important JCQ Regulations
We are committed to ensuring every student receives the support they are entitled to. However, please be aware that Exam Access Arrangements (such as extra time) are strictly regulated by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ). We must adhere to these rules to avoid malpractice.
- A diagnosis does not mean your child will automatically qualify for access arrangements. The JCQ requires specific evidence that the student has a substantial impairment which impacts their speed of processing during assessments.
- Arrangements cannot be granted solely for final exams. They must reflect the student’s normal way of working in the classroom and during internal tests. If a student does not use an arrangement (like extra time) for their regular class work or mocks, we are not permitted to grant it for external exams.
- If you are considering a private assessment for your child, under strict JCQ regulations, we cannot accept a private report as evidence for access arrangements unless there is an established working relationship between the school and the assessor. Any report must be dated within 26 months of the exam period.
At Parkside, we work with the following specialist assessors:
Dyspraxia
Assessments for Dyspraxia are medical and must be referred via your GP or a medical doctor. The school cannot conduct these assessments but will support with any educational strategies recommended following a diagnosis.
