Post 16 visit to BRI

Our Post 16 students had an amazing opportunity to gain an invaluable insight into the BRI theatres departments last week.
The students learnt about the specific job roles within this specialised area, the skills required and the pathways to gain entry into them. They also listened to some of the staff who worked within the department, at all levels, including Operating Department Practitioners (ODP's) There was an extremely useful conversation about alternative routes/Plan B's, should they miss out on the more direct routes and future jobs.

They rotated around:
Artificial intelligence and the role it plays. They viewed the new AI's operating on patients operated by the surgeons.
Ethicon - Diathermy - experienced 'cutting into an orange' AKA skin
Medartis - Plates & screws - learnt more about how the plates are used within the body and how they are much more efficiently engineered
Airway Management- gained an insight into resus, procedures used and how they manage more complicated situations
ICU simulation- how everything worked during Covid and what happens on a day to basis on ICU.

Feedback was excellent - everyone now knows more about job roles within this area of the NHS, subject choices and pathways linking into these type of job roles, feel more inspired to investigate careers within this area and agreed that attending sessions like this helped them make key decisions at the end of year 13 about career pathways and choices.
