Key Stage 3 Structure
YEAR 7

Basic skills – map atlas and graph work – refreshing and building on primary school skills.

Settlements  - they are the places we live in so its pretty important that we know why they are there, what functions they have, the problems they face and how you, the next generation, are going solve them all!

OS map of Haverfordwest

Economic Activities – in short jobs.  What different types of job there are, how they are distributed across the world and how they have changed over time. All this and how they operate and how they choose the ideal site for maximum profits.  A must for any budding entrepreneur!

The Home Region –The continents, Europe, the British Isles, Yorkshire and local studies – splitting stereotypes from reality. Why our home area is like it is. How much do you know about your surroundings? Quite a lot to squeeze in there.

YEAR 8

Atlas and Graphical skills - refreshes and develops your skills for the following topic about…….

Population and Development – how many people live on Earth, where do they live and do they all have the same opportunities in life?  The answers and the reasons behind those answers will all be discovered.

The Life Layer -  and now for something completely different.  The last topic was totally human Geography, this one is seriously physical.  A look at the layers of that giant onion we call Earth that support life. What enables life to exist here and why are climates and ecosystems so varied across the planet?  We finish with a major project on Threats to The Life Layer – meaning us – and what we do to threaten the very things that give us life.

Quarrying Competition.  The quarry is closing and the locals don’t want an eyesore in the countryside.  Which team can put forward the best regeneration plan and win a multi million pound contract to transform the disused quarry site?

YEAR 9

Tectonic Processes – Volcanoes – are they the most destructive force on the planet or is the opposite in fact true?  Could you save lives by accurately predicting whether a volcano is going to erupt – or will you just evacuate them for no real reason?  You will get to find out in this topic.

Tourism – The fastest growing in the world today!  We are all tourists at some time or other and many of our students that live in and around Haworth know what it is like to live in a popular tourist destination.  What are the good, bad and ugly sides to this major industry?  Why do we travel, where do we travel and what do we do whilst on holiday?  How does our visit benefit locals and how do we cause them problems?

Rivers – Friend or Foe? We all know what a river looks like but can we actually define the word river?  Why are they there? What is their purpose and what do they also do whilst carrying out this purpose?  What impact do rivers have on people and also what impact do we have on them?

The order of some topics may change in order to incorporate fieldwork at suitable times of year or to make best use of resources.
