Spanish
Course Description
The new Spanish AS level is an exciting new course aimed at immersing students in contemporary Spanish & Latin American Society, language and culture. It develops the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing acquired at GCSE Higher tier, through the more adult topics of the Media, Popular Culture, Lifestyles and Relationships.

At A2, the topics recognise the increasing maturity of students and tackle ‘meaty’ issues such as multi-cultural society, the environment and social issues. Students also have the choice of studying either a period of history, a region or country plus a famous Spanish or Latin American cultural figure in greater depth, as part of their cultural topic.

As well as a good GCSE grade (a high C or above) in Spanish, students need to have a genuine interest in all things to do with Spain and Latin America and a willingness to express their opinions in the target language. Students can progress on to the A2 course if they gain a ‘D’ or above at AS.

‘A’ level Spanish students typically go on to do Hispanic studies at university, find work with tour companies and airlines, or within the fields of international business, law and teaching.

General Comments
A level Spanish graduate, Joanne Stanworth, (class of 2006) gained a grade B at A level and went on to study Spanish and French at Edinburgh University. She is now in her second year and is looking forward to her year abroad in Paris & Alicante.
Joanne described her Spanish A level as giving her an excellent grounding for degree level Spanish and hopes to go on to work as a translator for a multinational company.
