Government and Politics
Course Description
Government & Politics, like Sociology and Psychology, is a “Social Science”. In this course you will study various aspects of both our own UK political system such as voting systems, laws and Parliament. We will also cover some of the most controversial and difficult issues facing the world today, such as international terrorism, globalisation, conflict, poverty, human rights abuses and civil liberties.

Amongst the specific issues we will look at will be:
AS level – What do the different Parties stand for? Do they represent your interests?
How do elections work? Are they fair and democratic?
Is politics just about voting and MP's? What role do protest groups play?

A2 – What is Britain's role in the UN and deciding International and European action in politics?

What is “terrorism” and who is responsible for it?

Is our Government a serious abuser of Human Rights and Civil Liberties?

Are environmental issues such as global warming being manipulated and exploited by politicians?

YOU MIGHT FIND THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS VERY INTERESTING!

General Comments
Government and Politics will be an academically demanding ‘A’ level, and a good range of GCSE passes at A* - C is highly desirable, especially in English & Humanities. However, a genuine interest in Society, News and Current Affairs is essential.

WITH SO MANY PROBLEMS IN TODAY’S WORLD, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO STUDY GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS!
