Course Description

The aim of the AS level German course is to immerse students in contemporary German, Austrian and Swiss society, language and culture. It encourages students to devlop an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning and equips them with the skills to communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in German for a range of purposes.

The course develops the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills acquired at GCSE Higher Tier through the more adult topics of Leisure and Lifestyles, The Individual and Society at AS level and Environmental Issues and Social and Political Issues at A2 level.

Course Content
Instead of sitting a writing examination at A2 level, students complete a guided study (like coursework) on one of the following topics: The World of Cinema, The World of Literature or The Regions of Germany.
General Comments
As well as a good GCSE grade (a high C or above) in German, students need to have a genuine interest in German culture and society and a willingness to express their opinions in the target language. Students can progress on to the A2 course if they gain a ‘D’ or above at AS.

‘A’ level German students often choose to continue their language study at university level or gain employment within the Travel and Tourism Industry or within the fields of International Business, Law, Translation and Interpreting and Teaching.
