Course Description
This fast paced, exciting contemporary dance course will help to build your technical skills in dance and will provide you with a solid understanding and appreciation of this interesting subject. Weekly technique classes work on your strength, flexibility, co-ordination and stamina and choreography classes provide you with an opportunity to explore your own creative ideas. AS focuses on solo performance and choreography and A2 builds your skills in group work. Performance opportunities are built in throughout the course.

In addition to the practical elements of the course you will also study anatomy and physiology, notation and dance analysis. The programme combines the academic and practical elements of dance in a logical and interesting way, which will give you an extremely thorough understanding of the subject. The A level dance course is highly regarded and respected by universities and vocational dance schools.
In order to succeed in this subject, you will need to be self motivated, committed and be open to improving your Dance skills in both written and practical work. There is a need to be prepared to put in extra time for rehearsal. Contrary to what many people think, there is a large workload for A Level Dance so you need to be organised and very dedicated.

There will be many opportunites to see professional works and work with dance companies in order to build on your skills to choroegraph, perform and analyse.

Course Content
AS Level
Unit 1 – Practical exam; choreograph and perform a solo dance from specific tasks set by the exam board – 40%
Unit 2 – Coursework essay; provide a detailed analysis of the solo and performance for unit 1 – 30%
Unit 3 – Written exam; compulsory short answered questions and structured essay questions – 30%

A Level
Unit 4 – Practical exam; choreograph a group dance in which you do not perform, specific tasks are set by the exam board – 15%
Unit 5 – Practical exam; Perform a set dance and a performance from a notated score – 15%
Unit 6 – Written exam; section A, answer one question, section B answer 2 questions, one question on each of the set works – 20%

General Comments
Candidates are expected to acquire experience of choreography and performance and to engage in critical thinking about dance. The specifications promote progression in depth and complexity through AS and A2 examinations and provide a suitable foundation for study in higher education and for employment.
