| Course Description |
AS/A2 level art is a fantastic opportunity for you to fully explore your creativity, expressing feelings
and opinions through a wide range of two and three dimensional media, processes and techniques. Drawing skills are fundamental and form an important element in all units; other strength areas include painting and photography. A lot of our students bring existing skills such as textiles or welding to their art, we welcome and support this as it adds to the vibrant life of the department. You will research and analyse art, craft and design from a range of times and cultures, which will form an integral part of practical work and also be evidenced through written pieces. You will use a sketchbook to demonstrate the development of your ideas, experiments with processes and a growing understanding of art history.
AS art allows you to explore a breadth of ideas, A2 aims to develop these with more depth and independence. At AS, coursework and exam components account for 50% of the final mark. At A2, coursework and exam units are worth 25% of the final mark, as are AS units.
The new specification allows you more freedom to explore ideas and develop a personal style with confidence, with the reduced pressure of producing one rather than two units per year.
The course provides an excellent foundation for further study of Art & Design and we have a 100% success rate with entry onto Foundation courses. Some students also choose to move straight onto degree study if they are clear about which area they want to work in. Students moving onto study in other areas feel analytical and problem-solving skills learned are valuable and transferable.

| Course Content |
AS Level
Portfolio unit – coursework from September until the end of January.
Externally set assignment – starting point from AQA, work to be completed between February and May including 5 hours of supervised exam time near the beginning of the unit. This will be used for a timed piece of preparatory work leading towards the rest of the unit’s work.
A Level
Personal investigation unit – from July to the end of January. Practical coursework including between 1000 and 3000 words of analytical writing about relevant artist(s) linking to your own practise.
Externally set assignment – starting point from AQA, work to be completed between February and May terminating in a 15 hour exam to produce a final piece.

| General Comments |
The course requires you to express yourself through drawing, writing, sketchbook work and final pieces. Ideally, you will have completed GCSE Art and Design to provide the firm base of skills and knowledge needed to attempt the course, but it is not a pre-requisite if you can demonstrate the necessary skills through a portfolio of work or sketchbooks. You will need to be open minded, hardworking and positive. You will receive comprehensive support and encouragement and access to opportunities including gallery trips, residential visits, working with professional artists and much, much more. We regularly exhibit work at Future House leading to sales of pieces, commissions and winning great prizes in competitions. Student work is currently featuring on syllabus covers and promotional material for the authority.
