Textiles

What will I study at Key stage 4?

This course offers the opportunity to learn about designing, making and evaluating artefacts in textiles. The students will be able to; add colour to enrich fabrics, design fashion accessories, educational toys, wall hangings or soft furnishings in response to a design brief. They will gain knowledge of different types of fibres, yarns and fabrics and their properties, the industrial processes associated with textiles and make the textile products which they have designed.

Year 10 will involve students in developing basic skills through a series of structured tasks and culminate in several mini projects which fulfil many of the exam. objectives and prepare the students for the assessed components in year 11.

Examination 40% of the total marks.


There are two tiers: 'foundation' and 'higher'. Students will be entered for the appropriate tier based on teacher assessment.

Examples of previous project briefs.


Many young people with learning difficulties can benefit from activity products made from textile materials. Using a range of modern fabrics & techniques design a product that will be of some educational value to a child with learning difficulties. If successful your product could be produced in quantity.
A local craft shop has invited you to produce a range of fashion accessories to display & sell in their shop. Their current popular trend is towards the theme of Africa. Design & make a selection of products that could be presented to the craft shop. If it proves to be popular you may be asked to produce the products in quantity.
