What will I study at Key stage 4?

Science is still compulsory at Key Stage 4. Here at Parkside, we offer a number of different courses so that we can help you achieve your full potential.  Below are two of the four possible routes to success in Key Stage 4 Science are:

OCR Level 2 National Certificate

This course is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at Grade A* - C.  It is designed to develop a student’s knowledge, understanding and skills, in contexts that are directly relevant to the scientific workplace.  You will also develop the ability to work effectively in the scientific field.

You will have to complete six units of work.  The units currently studied are:

Unit One                          Best practice in Science

Unit Two                          Materials Science

Unit Three                       Forensic Science

Unit Four                         Food Science

Unit Eleven                      The Science of the Universe and Humanity

Unit Twelve                     Career Planning for Science

The course allows progression to Level Three courses at Post 16, including academic Science A’ Levels, as well as further vocational studies.  It also equips you with knowledge, skills and experience for employment in many work environments.

OCR Level 2 National Award

This course is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at Grade A* - C.  It operates in the same way as the National Certificate (above), but you only have to complete three units of work (Unit 1, Unit 2 and Unit 11).  It is generally for students who would find it difficult to complete the full six units of work required for the National Certificate.

What assessments will I do?

It is assessed 100% by school based portfolio work, with no examinations.

Why should I do Science?

Science is a compulsory subject at Key Stage 4, but that is not the only reason why you have to take it.  During the two years studying Science you will cover many interesting topics and develop many key skills that you will need to use in all sorts of situations throughout your life.  Many of these skills are also transferable to the other subjects that you will be studying.

What courses or employment can I progress to at the end of my course?

Many Post 16 courses regard GCSE Science as an entry requirement, as do many careers.

In particular the OCR National Certificate will allow students to progress onto level 3 studies in the Applied Sciences or onto the more traditional Physics, Chemistry & Biology A’levels.

The range of jobs requiring Science qualifications is huge – speak to your Science teacher or look at the displays around the department.  Remember scientists don’t just wear white coats and work in laboratories!
