What will I study at Key stage 4?

You will need to complete four units:

The course is broken up into five areas of study:

  1. Music for film
  2. Music for dance
  3. Music for special events
  4. Orchestral landmarks
  • You will produce a portfolio and recordings of two compositions, one of which is based on “Music for Special Events”. The compositions can be written in any style but you should show variety within them.
  • You will also perform (play or sing) one solo and one ensemble piece of your choice. This may be done at any time during the course and may take place in the classroom, in school music groups or outside school.

What assessments will I do?

There are four parts to the final examination:

  • Coursework composing 25%
  • Coursework performing 25%
  • Integrated assignment – one composition, based on one of four areas of study (excluding “Music for Special Events”) 25%
  • Listening and Appraising test – a listening and written paper lasting one hour and fifteen minutes 25%

Why should I do Music?

Because this is a subject which:

  • Involves performing, composing/arranging music and listening to all kinds of music
  • Gives you the opportunity to play music with others in, for example, rock bands, brass bands, ensembles, orchestras or choirs.
  • Gives you the opportunity to learn more about recording, mixing and music technology.
