What will I study at Key stage 4?

A stimulating environment offering a full range of multi-media workshops   encouraging creativity in wood, metal and plastics plus specific rooms and studios for graphic design, food, textiles and systems & control.

Excellent ICT facilities including CAD / CAM

This course gives the student the opportunity to work with a range of foods in order to gain knowledge and understanding of the working characteristics and processing techniques used when designing and making food products.

 

Year 10 will involve building upon the students basic making skills and applying the design process~ developing ideas, planning, producing products & evaluating them.

 

Making activities include:-

 

- evaluating existing products

- comparing products

- sensory analysis

- preparation skills

- cookery skills

- altering methods or processes

- manipulative skills

- organisational skills

- using kitchen equipment

- adapting recipes

Food Materials &Components

  • structure & properties of food
  • effect of temperature on the processing and storage of food
  • working characteristics of food

 

 

 

Food Processing

 

 

  • working characteristics of ingredients
  • effect of combining ingredients
  • the interaction of different foods during preparation, processing &cooking
  • industrial production of food products

 

 

Food Product Design- market influences

 

 

  • evaluating existing products
  • finding out customers views
  • quality control
  • labelling and packaging of food
  • environmental issues

 

 

 

 

The Final Project

 

 

  • to design and make a food product prototype
  • produce a design folder and appropriate ICT evidence
  • eg. Design and make a “ready to eat” dessert which could be sold in a major retail outlet.

or

  • Design and make a product which could be sold within a party pack of multi-cultural foods

What assessments will I do?

Written paper:                  40% of the total marks

                                         Foundation Tier   2 hours

                                         Higher Tier          2 hours

Coursework project:         60% of the total marks

                                         [40 hours maximum]
