Expressive Arts

Dance

What will I study at Key stage 4?

The course covers seven areas:

Learning good studio practice - using space and working with others

Dance technique - the skills involved in learning and performing

Expressing yourself through dance - developing your own ideas, feelings and emotions

Choreography  - creating your own dance works

Presentatio - staging and costume

Appreciation forms - of historical, traditional, classical and modern dance

Linking - dance, drama, music and art

It involves hard work – both physically and mentally. You will need to be imaginative, inventive and creative in both areas. You will need to be self critical – striving to improve your technique, skills and communication. Your body will become more in tune with your brain – your brain will develop ideas that can be communicated through the movement of your body

You will learn how to express and develop ideas, understand the concepts of choreography, performance and appreciation of a wide range of dance forms from street dance to contemporary

What assessments will I do?

There are three elements:-

A two hour written paper – covering studio practice, the general nature of performance in dance, study of the work of professional dance companies and a set of work.            20%

A practical examination covering performance of the set study lasting one minute         20%

Coursework:- performance in a group dance and choreographing your own piece with
supporting programme notes   60%

Why should I do Dance ?

Imperative – from your previous experience you know you enjoy dance – it makes you feel alive – and you feel that you can do well at it.

Complementary – You are interested in Drama, Music and Performing Arts – perhaps you see it as a career path – and therefore Dance makes an obvious choice to go with your other GCSE’s

Contrasting – You want to take a subject that will give you an opportunity to express yourself emotionally and physically – to balance other more academic ones.

If you are well motivated, thinking about pursuing your interest in Performing Arts and enjoy creative physical activity – then dance is for you
